What Is Nevus of Ota?

What Is Nevus of Ota?

Nevus of Ota is a congenital or early-onset pigmentation disorder characterized by bluish-gray discoloration around the eye and sometimes within the eye itself, including the sclera (the white part of the eye) and the conjunctiva.

Although benign, it can be cosmetically disturbing, particularly when it affects only one eye.

Does Nevus of Ota Affect Vision?

In most cases, vision remains normal.

However, some patients may have an increased risk of ocular complications such as glaucoma, which is why regular ophthalmic examinations are recommended.

Can Nevus of Ota Be Treated?

Laser treatments can often improve skin pigmentation associated with Nevus of Ota.

However, pigmentation involving the sclera and conjunctiva is much more difficult to eliminate completely.

Can the Appearance Be Improved?

Yes.

In selected cases, cosmetic improvement may be achieved by placing specially designed pigments beneath the conjunctiva to mask the dark discoloration.

This technique does not remove the underlying pigmentation but can significantly improve the cosmetic appearance of the eye.

Is This Procedure Suitable for Everyone?

No.

Each patient requires a detailed ophthalmic examination to determine whether cosmetic pigmentation is appropriate. The extent, depth, and location of the pigmentation must be carefully evaluated.

Why Does Experience Matter?

Subconjunctival cosmetic pigmentation is a highly specialized procedure performed by very few surgeons worldwide.

Successful results require a detailed understanding of ocular anatomy, pigmentation techniques, and long-term tissue behavior.

Prof. Dr. Mahmut Kaşkaloğlu has extensive experience in ocular pigmentation and keratopigmentation procedures and offers individualized cosmetic solutions for selected patients with Nevus of Ota who are seeking aesthetic improvement.
